my mind runs like
empty trains as i stare
into the dark ceiling, wondering
what it would be like to dream.

there are notions running through my head
that i cannot turn off,
that i cannot ignore.
i get up and write them down,
hoping that these thoughts will finally
quiet down and allow me to sleep.

rain drips, drips, drips
down the windowpanes and causes
havoc on my brain.
they demand attention even as i get up
once more and
wish for the sky to stop crying so much.

i count the jumping sheep and
5-6-7-8 wish for sleep to penetrate
through my shield of endless wake.
i notice that in the night light,
the ceiling creates patterns of shadows that
shift and change before my eyes.
o5
i turn around and gaze at my roommate,
who lies soundly asleep.
your resolve gets you through the end
and i am left here in the dust,
waiting for sleep to come.

Insomnia
Last night I made paper airplanes out of stray thoughts
and I let them fly in the space between us.
And while you tapped your feet to a beat I couldn't understand,
I counted stars.
Because sometimes you see yourself reflected in the eyes
of someone you don't know.
And what I know about myself is that I
walk in straight lines and like the smell of orange peels
and know that fog is just low hanging clouds.
But you, with eyes made from a cypress tree
always feel like winter's approaching and your leaves

For Me
For the world you are nothing
but one of its million organisms.
For a country you are nothing
but a worker, a civilian.
For a town you are nothing
but a resident.
For me you are everything:
all that I require
all that I want
for now and always.

Why Do You Sleep?
Why Do You Sleep?
I sleep to escape the bitterness reality has to offer
I sleep so from pain I wont have to suffer
I sleep to calm my unrested soul even for a while
I sleep to get myself to dream and smile
I sleep so I wont have to say goodbye
To the same thing that makes me laugh and cry
I sleep so I can continue loving with all my heart
Perhaps in my sleep we will never be apart
If in my dreams you can return my love too
Then I wont have to wake up and be blue
If in my dreams we can be together
I would sleep forever.
